Converting Word documents to PowerPoint presentations has always been a hassle. Whether you rely on one of these online format converters or manually paste/import the content, the output quality is almost never perfect. With this concern in mind, Microsoft has now released a new feature which allows you to generate PowerPoint presentations from Word documents through the web version of Microsoft Word.

Turn Word documents into PowerPoint presentations

Before I start, I’ll point out the limitations of the feature. For now, the feature is only available in English. Also, it does not support Internet Explorer and Safari browsers. In particular, he only supports text content at the moment and other media content such as images will not be automatically added at the presentation. However, you can always add media to the presentation later.

Steps to Convert Word Documents to PowerPoint Presentations

1. Open the Word document in Office Online. You must upload the file to OneDrive to open it from the web version of Word. After its opening, click File -> Transform.

2. In the Transform section, click on ‘Convert to PowerPoint presentation’ and wait for the next page.

3. Word now prompts you to choose a design theme for the presentation. Choose one of the available models and click on ‘Transform’ to generate the presentation file.

4. In a few seconds, a new presentation based on your Word document will be generated. Once ready, you can click on ‘Open Presentation’ to open it. You can also access the presentation file from your OneDrive.

To test this functionality, I downloaded a sample Word document and turned it into a presentation. The output looked usable and you can use it for presentations with a few tweaks. Additionally, as Microsoft points out, the company also adds images, icons, videos, themes, and fonts to the presentation using AI in the transformation process. That said, the tool will be a bit more useful if the company manages to bring media transfer in the future. Here are some examples of presentation slides generated with this method:
