I love the group messaging feature on iMessage. With iOS 14, the introduction of new iMessage features such as inline replying and the ability to tag or mention people in group messages made it even better. However, the new mention feature also means you’ll get notifications even on muted group chats if someone mentions your name. In this article, I will show you how to turn off iMessage mentions notification to fix this problem.
Disable iMessage Mentions Notification on iPhone
While I want to keep the mentions feature enabled for muted groups because it helps me get notifications for messages directed at me without having to constantly be bombarded with notifications for all messages, there are some groups which I wish to keep completely silent.
The only problem is that you can’t do it group by group. You can either disable mention notification for all groups or none. So keep that in mind before doing this setup.
1. Open the Settings app and tap Messages.
2. Here, Scroll down to find the “Notify Me” toggle under “Mentions” and turn it off.
That’s it. You will not receive notifications for muted chats, even if someone mentions your name in the group chat.
Completely Disable Group Messages on iPhone and iPad
As you can see, the steps are quite simple. I would like Apple to allow me to turn off mention notifications for specific groups. But until that feature is here, I guess we have to make do with what we have right now. At least I don’t have to get mention notifications even when I don’t want to.
iOS 14 is peppered with features like this. If you’ve installed the update, be sure to check out our coverage on the new features, including the back tap feature, widgets, custom icons, and more.
