In a recent Windows Insider release, Microsoft added a new weather and news widget to the Windows 10 taskbar. Although you might have to wait a while to get your hands on this widget on your Windows 10 PC, Microsoft has now added a similar widget to its Edge browser. And today we are going to see how to enable and use News and Weather widget on Microsoft Edge Chromium.
Get information and weather widget on Microsoft Edge
As of this writing, the widget is limited to the Edge Canary channel and I have it on Edge Canary build 89.0.765.0. Additionally, the feature benefits from “controlled feature deployment” – a fancy term for A/B testing. This means you might not see the feature even if you have the latest Edge Canary. However, we might expect the feature to roll out more widely and even to other Edge channels in the future. That said, let’s get started.
Steps to Enable News & Weather Widget on Edge
1. Open the Edge browser and click on the horizontal three-dot menu present at the top right corner. In the list of options that now appear, click Settings to enter the Settings page.
2. In the left sidebar of the Settings page, click on ‘New tab page’. Here you will notice a new entry titled “Get personalized search and news anytime – web widget keeps you up to date without opening a browser”. Click “Launch web widget now to see how it works” to open the news widget. You can also choose to launch the widget on system startup by enabling the “Show web widget when your computer starts” toggle.
News widget customization options
By default, Edge opens the News & Weather widget in a vertical layout. The first standing there is a search bar where you can search with Bing or visit a website. As soon as you enter the search query or URL and hit enter, the widget will take you to the Edge browser. Below you have the weather widget and the newsfeed. You can choose to disable the weather map if you want to use this widget only for news updates. Microsoft also packed stocks and cricket cards at the bottom.
You can click on the Language and content button present at the bottom left corner to change the region and language food. Next to the language selection you have the refresh button to manually refresh the feed. The See More button takes you to the Microsoft News page on the browser.
To display more content, you can resize the widget vertically. Although it shows arrow resize markers when I tried to resize the widget horizontally, it didn’t respond, which leads me to believe that it might be a bug right now moment. If you prefer a broader view, you can switch to the dashboard layout in the Settings menu.
Take a look at the dashboard layout below. Here you will have to choose two of the available maps: weather, finance, sports and traffic. I chose finance and cricket cards in this case. It should be noted that you have the possibility of adding companies that you follow closely in the funding map.

So that’s all the features you can use on Edge’s new widget. If you find this widget useful, you can pin it to the taskbar by right-clicking the icon and choosing “Pin to taskbar”. For more Edge features, be sure to check out our article on the best Microsoft Edge metrics you should be using.
