If you have recently switched from WhatsApp to Signal, you may have noticed that deleting a contact from Signal is not as easy as expected. Unlike other chat apps like WhatsApp, deleting a contact from your phonebook doesn’t automatically remove them from the Signal contact list. If you’re wondering how to delete Signal contacts, here’s everything you need to know to avoid unwanted interactions on the secure messaging platform.
Delete contacts from signal contact list
1. The Basics
Before we get into the delete contacts part, it’s important to understand how Signal manages your contacts. If you have saved the contact in your address book, you will see a contact icon next to the username. Take a look at the image below to know how the contact appears when you have saved someone and when the contact is not in your address book.
2. Delete the contact if you have never chatted before
If you’ve never texted the person you want to remove from Signal, it’s easy to remove them from your Signal contact. Instead of looking to delete the contact in the Signal app, you should go to your phone’s address book and delete the contact. You can quickly access the contact’s entry by tapping the “This person in your contacts” option on Signal’s contact page. After deleting the number, swipe up on Signal’s contacts page to refresh contacts. You will see that the number in question no longer appears in the list. It goes without saying that deleting the number from the address book also deletes the contact from other applications.
3. Delete the contact if you have already chatted
If you have a chat history with the person you want to remove from Signal, deleting the contact can be tricky. Even if you delete their number from the address book, the person will appear in Signal’s contact list without the contact icon. To delete the contact entirely in such cases, you should block the person. You can expand the contact page and press the Block button to block them. Alternatively, you can do this from Settings -> Privacy -> Blocked Users -> Add Blocked User.
4. Delete the contact from Signal Desktop
If you’re using Signal’s desktop app, you’ll notice that all of your contacts are present in the left sidebar of the home page. To delete a contact, open the conversation window, click on the three horizontal dots present in the upper right corner and choose “Delete”. This way, the contact will disappear from the contact list until you receive a new message from them.
