The other day I came across a guide on how to set any song as a ringtone in Android, and I couldn’t help but laugh at the agony or rather tedious workaround that iOS users need to follow to set any song as custom ringtone. Unlike iOS, Android gives you a fairly easy way to choose any track as your ringtone. While there’s no denying that Apple has simplified a lot of things, setting a custom ringtone on an iPhone has been a hassle for ages. And it still is. But don’t worry, because we’re detailing an easier way to set a song as iPhone ringtone without iTunes or PC in this article. Let me walk you through the steps.
Set Any Song as iPhone Ringtone without iTunes or Computer
Before you start the process, be sure to check off the requirements to create your favorite song, whether it’s Billie Eilish’s You should see me in a Crown or Queen’s We Are the Champions iPhone ringtone.
Prerequisites to Set Any Song as iPhone Ringtone
There are a few requirements to set a song as a ringtone on iOS. First, make sure you’ve already downloaded the song and saved it to your music library or Files app.
Second, you need the GarageBand app to edit the song and export it as your iPhone ringtone. The app is available for free and requires iOS 14 or later. So make sure to download this stock app if it is not already available on your iOS device.
Now, let’s create our custom ringtone directly on iPhone without using iTunes or PC. Follow the steps below:
Create a custom ringtone on your iPhone
- Launch it GarageBand App on your iPhone.
2. Now make sure the Tracks tab is selected if it is not already selected. After that, select the desired instrument from a handful of options like a drummer, keyboard, guitar, and more. For this guide, I’m going with the drummer.
3. Then press project icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
4. Then select the loop icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
5. Now go to the Files tab located at the top. After that press Browse items in the Files app. If you downloaded a ZIP/compressed file, learn how to extract files on your iPhone here.
6. In the Files app, navigate to song you want to use as your iPhone ringtone and tap it. The song will be imported into Garageband.
7. Drag and drop the imported track after the instrument defined as the first track in the audio editing interface.
8. Now it’s time to edit the song as you like and make ringtone without using iTunes or PC.
- Choose the starting point of the song: Touch and hold the track, then drag the handle to select the starting point for your ringtone.
- Split track: Touch and hold the track to access hidden editing tools, then choose Split. After that drag the little scissors icon down to cut the song.
- Delete unwanted part of song: Select the unwanted part of the song, then choose the To erase option in the context menu.
- Undo changes: Tap the reverse arrow icon in the upper right corner of the screen to discard changes.
- Play your modified ringtone: Once you have edited the track, press the player button at the top to check whether or not the ringtone is what you are looking for.
Set a custom ringtone on your iPhone
1. Once you are happy with your custom ringtone edit, tap the small down icon in the upper left corner and choose the my songs option.
2. Next, long press on your project and choose To share.
3. Then press “Alarm” to export your project as an iPhone ringtone (file type .m4r or .m4a).
To note: Keep in mind that your iPhone’s custom ringtone should last no more than 30 seconds. If it’s longer, the GarageBand app will automatically shorten its duration when exporting the track as an iPhone ringtone. Press on To continue proceed.
4. After that, give an appropriate name on your ringtone and press the Export button in the upper right corner of the screen.
5. Once you have successfully exported the song as a ringtone on your iPhone, press the “Use sound as…” option that appears.
6. Finally choose “Standard ringtone” from the menu to set your favorite song as your custom iPhone ringtone.
It should be noted that you can also set it as a standard text ringtone or assign the ringtone to a favorite contact. Note that if you don’t want to use the song as a ringtone just yet, tap Done to finish. Later, you can head to Settings app -> Sounds & Haptics -> select your ringtone and choose the custom ringtone from the list.

This is how you can create and set any song as your ringtone on iOS 14. Although the whole process may not seem entirely simple, it works reliably and fills the gap. So, until Apple comes up with a better solution, make the most of this trick.
